Prince William & Kate's Last Name: Mountbatten-Windsor

Now that Prince William and Kate Middleton are married, some are wondering their last name.

Like other descendants of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, William's surname is Mountbatten-Windsor, and it will be Kate's too by marriage.

As explained by the official British royal website, the Queen's descendants carry the name Mountbatten, as well as the royal surname Windsor, to reflect her husband Prince Philip's surname.

The royal website explains further that the surnames are not always used, only when they are formally needed, such as the case of marriage.

While Prince William will be recorded as a Mountbatten-Windsor in the marriage registry today, he may choose a new name at a later point, specifically if and when he becomes king. As explained here, "Since a royal proclamation is not binding on succeeding rulers, King William could decide to add a name or two."

Prince William and Kate, who will go by the name of Catherine, also inherited the titles Duke and Duchess of Cambridge upon their marriage today.

Future Car Focus: Robot Cars
Google's landmark deployment of autonomous cars — vehicles that can drive themselves — onto public roads and into live human traffic last summer and early fall was announced casually, and after the fact.

Astonishingly, the search-engine giant was able to set loose seven Toyota Prius hybrids, all adorned with a dizzying array of odd-looking sensors, onto Highway 1 between San Francisco and Los Angeles for several months without raising suspicion. Each vehicle was piloted by artificial-intelligence software designed to interpret the data collected by the sensors and use it to mimic the decisions made by a human driver. The goal: to fundamentally change the way we use cars.

How so, you ask? Google believes that the use of autonomous vehicles could nearly halve the number of automobile-related deaths — which it estimates at 1.2 million worldwide per year — because computers are theoretically more precise drivers than humans. In addition, the instant reaction time and 360-degree awareness of computer-controlled vehicles would allow them to ride closer together on the highway than vehicles driven by humans, thus reducing traffic congestion. And finally, they can be more fastidious with the accelerator, reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions considerably.

Prince William takes Kate Middleton to grave of Diana, Princess of Wales

Prince William has taken Kate Middleton on an emotional visit to his mother’s grave just days ahead of their wedding.

The pair are believed to have made the journey to the ancestral home of Diana, Princess of Wales, in Althorp, Northants, this month and held hands as they lay flowers in her memory.

The Prince has spoken openly of his desire to share his wedding day with his mother and knows how much it would have meant to her.

A royal source said: “It was very important for William to take Kate to visit his mum just before their wedding day.

“Diana is still a huge part of her boys’ everyday life and always will be.
“It is tragic that she won’t be there to see the wedding, and that she never got to meet his bride.

“But even though Kate never met Diana she knows what an incredible woman she was and it is very important to her she can share and understand William’s love and grief for his mum.”

The young couple strolled through the grounds of the Althorp Estate, the Spencer family seat, before rowing a boat across the lake known as The Oval to the small wooded island on which the Princess was buried 14 years ago.
